Searching successfully for retro clothes and vintage clothing is getting to be more of an uphill task these days, so, if you are a fashion and style enthusiast , with a passion for vintage clothing, 1960s fashion or California style , you will know exactly what I mean.

If you have been rummaging through attic sales, garage sales or estate sales, looking for that unusual flower power clothing piece, without much luck, then vintage inspired and retro clothing is your next best choice.

The vintage inspired and retro clothing worth collecting are a bit up-end in some cases, but you can carefully choose each piece, and end up acquiring a great collection of classic pieces of art. I call them 'timeless'.

I started my collections of antique and vintage clothing many years ago. What i did back then, was to mix-and-match contemporary designs and pieces, with the vintage collections that I owned. From a 50's bakerlite bag, a Pucci print, of the '60s (they're always in style, especially in black and white), to a 1960 cut velvet chiffon dress with a matching jacket. I mixed them creatively with any new fashion style that came along.

60'S Clothing styles keep on coming back

Today, the influence of 60's retro clothing can be seen everywhere. Designer fashion houses, high street outlets, and fashion conscious trendsetters all take inspiration from this decade. The 1960's was responsible for revolutions in music, film, and fashion, which may be why it is so well loved by vintage clothing aficionados.

The 1960's was an era of innovation and new thinking. Fashion was heavily influenced by the younger generations who were spending their wages on clothes and music. A school leaving age of fifteen meant that most teenagers over this age had full time jobs and an income to facilitate this spending.

Fashion followed three main phases but there were several popular sub genres too. The most iconic looks of the 1960's can be split depending on your sex. For women, it was the almost Carnaby chic look with mini skirts, short angular haircuts, and knee length boots. The late 60's gave way to the hippy style, which was heavily influenced by the music culture. Long hair, beads, and kaftans were the order of the day and flared trousers and jeans were being worn by anyone who had a real eye for fashion. Not everyone however favoured this style. Every now and again I take a look in my wardrobe and declare it... BORING!

My most recent declaration to my wardrobe resulted in a shopping trip at the end of which I was the proud owner on a half dozen (new) funky clothing labels, most of which I'd never heard of before, and one in particular that I'd bought from a mainstream catalog, albeit online. Funky Clothing is a Style All It's Own

'Modern, stylish and altogether unconventional' is the standard definition attributed to 'Funky Clothing'. I suppose that really means original! I'm not quite sure about 'Modern' because I've also seen many references to 'Vintage and Funky' when the term 'Funky Clothing' is being discussed.

Maybe by 'Modern' they mean a modern variation, and not necessarily new clothes. Anyhow 'Funky Clothing' is now a firmly established style all of its own, and as a style, it's best carried off with more than a pinch of self confidence, not least because of the unconventional approach the wearer brings to the ensemble.

Take any variation of a conventional wardrobe, whether vintage or new, colourful or subdued, mix them up and you've got your own unique outfit, totally unlike anything you'll see on the high street. Couple your unique outfit with a small amount of self confidence and you'll be guaranteed to turn heads.

Of the many different styles of clothing on sale today, there are all too many retailers wanting to hijack the 'Funky Clothing' label to their own ends, when in reality, funky and quirky clothing styles are often brand free. It's the unique combinations that you and I choose that determine the whole funky clothing movement.

The true hallmark of funky clothing for men or women is not in the clothes alone, it is as much the attitude with which they are worn. Be careful though, having an eye for design and style goes a long way when choosing your look. Simply throwing together a mish mash of vintage, retro or modern with any old group of colours, loud or otherwise, could well result in something that resembles an explosion in a paint factory.
